American Humane Association - "Founded in 1877, the American Humane Association is the only national organization dedicated to protecting both children and animals."

American Kennel Club - founded in 1884, the AKC seeks to "advance the study, breeding, exhibiting, running and maintenance of purebred dogs." The site contains a lot of information, including what you should know BEFORE you buy a dog and a list of recognized breeds with photos and descriptions of each.

Carroll Kennel Club - the local AKC sanctioned dog owners club open to persons 18 years of age or older.

The Cat Fanciers' Association, Inc. - maintains the largest registry of pedigreed cats, offers tips on caring for cats, and features more than 3 dozen different breed profiles with photos of each cat breed.

PetEducation.com - Large site with information about the "anatomy, behavior, & diseases" of dogs, cats, fish, birds, ferrets, reptiles, gerbils, hamsters, mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hedgehogs, and sugar gliders.

Petfinder.com - Search for adoptable pets, find adoption groups, learn what should know before you decide to adopt a pet.
